Young Innovator Goes All In!
In this episode of The Fence Podcast, Brian T. Frederiksen and the team opened with their usual industry banter before focusing on a busy calendar of upcoming events, including training sessions, fence cruises, association projects, and open houses. They discussed major community relief efforts tied to the California fires, where the fence industry is mobilizing temporary panels, materials, and licensed contractors to help protect damaged properties and assist homeowners during recovery. They also highlighted nonprofit service projects through NAFCA, including work in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Arlington National Cemetery. The featured guest, Dylan, represented a younger generation of fence entrepreneurs. He explained why he and his brother purchased a Superior Fence & Rail franchise, citing the benefits of an established brand, lead generation, software systems, vendor relationships, and operational support. Dylan shared that they are moving into their shop area to reduce overhead and are already focused on leadership, culture, and growth. The conversation emphasized how franchising can provide structure and buying power while still allowing owners to build a business with hands-on involvement and local decision-making.

Hey what's happening come on now second show of the year how are you frozen out there in in Las Vegas like are you frozen yeah yeah we're freaking Frozen back here really emergency yeah under yeah I think we've had 300 days of no moisture or rain believe it or not something crazy like that out here I mean I I think today was our first maybe the second day all year that we actually worked we've had no production until I'm jealous panic mode I'm jealous you know we before the show before the fence show in September we actually panicked to get the whole roof sealed around the back building uh you know at our office because it we always get rain and uh not a single drop since I swear it's just it's frustrating I almost want I almost want to put a bunch of water up there and test it just go just sprinkler head up there and say I knew I fixed it water Cal I mean Las Vegas would lose their mind if you just water through the roof of your building could you imagine and just just tell them you're just doing to keep the temperature down yeah yeah we're not even yeah we're not even allowed to use real water when we shower it's like yeah yeah we're on a different whole different ball game where's your hat man what did I see you purchasing a blue hat a real deal man I went all in and got the bluest blue hat I think there is on the planet so proud of that thing I can't believe I don't have it tonight stuck in the office I'm 40 minutes away from it but real from Fort wor Texas had it this thing molded to my head it was awesome you know what quick tip do you know where the cowboy hat quick tip not a tip do you know where the cowboy hat was invented G why no where where uh you want to say Texas but uh that's what I thought and the guy that did my hat this guy is that's all he does is makes hats he told me the whole story how it started in New York like what really New York New York but it was the top hat like the you know when you buy a cowboy hat that's unshaped looks really goofy right that's how they started in New York and these guys would run their horses all the way down whatever the wagons and by time they got the Texas their hand had crushed the top from taking on and off and bent the sides that you have the cowboy hat that you see today was that a worn hat and it wasn't called a cowboy hat till you earned it at down there at the bottom something along those lines I was quite stunned when he said New York I'm like no way get out of here there you have it everybody pizza cboy that's what we got probably and probably uh Bagels what else do we that's New York in a nutshell right yes so so what man what do you got going on I know you're just all over the place it it's your first day back at work so you gotta be sore or something first day back at work no I've let me make sure I'm clear Sean King has worked every one of those days okay we unfortunately have a ran production my poor team has been hurting on on man hours or time no time work but we uh we aren't going to release it tonight but I've been working heavily on the schedule for our 2025 I'm GNA be home in February I think three days and March five days that means there's a lot happening so I'll go there's about 28 events right now 28 events between now end of year that m v Academy will be putting on that's nuts that doesn't include private trainings that's nuts I mean we we only do a few out here right now we only do a few out of here right now at the fence University side and I'm telling you it's it's it takes a it's a lot of work these are big events I'm out in the retreat Madness May Mayhem fence week uh fence Camp it's just like yeah damn it's crazy so there's a lot going on what about you man what's happening in your world well the next major event is uh this Sunday it's my birthday we're all gonna all go to isumi Steak House this Sunday yeah so we're gonna get together a bunch of people um which I for a bunch of people to me is like four you know that's all my friends all together in one place so right they're they're all still on my MySpace that's where we Main alert I Bluetooth them all the information you know so Sunday big party big party Zumi Steakhouse oh my gosh but yeah but we got a lot of stuff going on too man it's just uh on the it's just one thing after another man I mean we've got the the fence Crews coming with the very very I think the very next event that we're going to be doing is uh unless I'm wrong Susan
Probably correct us the fence crew is coming up February 3D so uh how I think that's correct uh even for us no yeah you there is a I'm doing an event end of the month but other or not that F crew is the next big one with everybody I guess the crew sold out um I you know but they're still kind of like you can still call Megan and she's trying to like I think yeah beg and she's so far been putting people on lists or something and then as people are cancelling you're getting a room um obviously obviously the whole ship's not sold out of of for fencers but you know I mean all full of fencers but uh it's definitely getting to the point where wait a minute so wait they're they're limiting number of fencers we can come this boat well they limit the number of fencers everywhere you go you know what I mean yeah they hav even let us on they don't even know what we they have no idea what to expect there's state laws you can only have so many judging us yeah there state laws against having too many fencers together in Florida I guess I don't know what they're doing down no no but the whole ship is I guess the ship fills up I mean it's everybody's escaping the snow and uh you know I guess this I didn't realize how big of a deal it was for um people that are living up in those snow zones to uh go down south you know because looking forward to it I am absolutely looking forward to spend some time on a I love cruises anyway so right up my alley I love it and to have a cruise with this fence people yeah come on that's gonna be the best cruise I've ever been on right so it's gonna be fun it's gonna be fun I know we're still putting together some sort of training of some sort so we can all justify being on there not gonna be training IRS is listening training how to hold your how to you know how to beers hold your beer while the boat is sing without spilling it in case you're in you know just just you know stuff like that so it'll be a very very light hand I got you we'll be standing around the dinner table training and eating same yeah you and Heather's going too so that's cool gonna be fun it's gonna be fun and I know uh I haven't even got a full list of everybody that's going so it'll be some interesting pictures and stuff I have no idea like surprise yeah and then right after that um we come back there's two different events when's your uh fence in Texas one March 6 so March 6th and 7th yep okay March 6 and 7th so that much long after we get back yeah right well about a month later um and right after that I literally drive from Texas to uh Gat Merc for the retreat oh well let's not forget though right after the fence Cruise though I keep thinking March is after the fence cruise but it's actually February right after that we've got um we've got fence University training at JC gur's place so yes good Lord we can't foret about that one let's see if we can find that yeah so that's Wednesday the 12th 13th and 14th that's a hands on how to install a gate operator you go to had these all lined up for us in order we were we were supposed to we just completely went backwards on that sorry well that was because that was technically the next one see that's that's on her man that is on her so see everybody Susan does make a mistake absolutely you see look out L that's look at this lineup look at this lineup man I don't if this is a a l or a mosit or what look at this huh yes three days so three days of installation training on gate operator gonna put the real deal G it's an actual gate operator being installed at um JC G's Place now it's a gate everything is that right the gate operator uh the gate's already there so there'll be some modifications to the gate and stuff but coyote Denali which is a licensed uh contractor down in California is actually the one that's going to be doing the work since obviously he's licensed there to supervise the whole thing and make sure everything's getting built per all the local laws and regulations and stuff in the area because a little different everywhere you go so uh great lineup though yeah so 12 13 14 fence University if somebody's interested in that that's kind that's gonna come up quick right after the show now we gotta get back on track right I know so speaking of California yeah oh my God Cal whatever's left of it right it's uh are you watching that it's the way you cook your steaks well done yeah well done that's how I like my steaks um
I think I think there's going to be some cheap property down there soon if you ask me I think you're going to see some of these people just aren't going to rebuild I bet you know there's what 13 14,000 structures or something last I don't know how you rebuild with the permits and the problems they got down there that' be awful well you see the the irony and they're saying now um they're going to streamline permitting processes because the regulations are so horrible in California similar like Nevada it's so horrible that they have to go in now and wave all these regulations and stuff in order for people to be able to rebuild their homes in any kind of reasonable amount because permits on anything where off fence anything takes six nine months so that's that's going to obviously drop the you know drive up how long it takes to build them but fwa um it's obviously closer to me personally down here so we've gathered up already over 200 temporary panels and um we'll be staging those at a couple um locations down there from members that are involved in it um and we're going to be going down there we've already got a hold of um Susan is already talking to the fire command and um some of the city councils and some of these other places there so as soon as it's safe to go in um and they tell us where we're going to be out there setting up temporary panels to help with security and help with some of the um neighborhoods where they can't afford to put you know fences up around them while they're waiting on insurance and it's awful to hear people down there you know stealing and getting arrested for that R through that's awful man it's already bad enough event take advantage of that and and that's what it's about you got I mean can you imagine losing all your possessions and people you know whether whether these are multi-million dollar homes or whether it's a $100,000 house it's it's still those are still pictures of your of your you know family heirlooms and stuff that your family may have had that's been passed down they're just gone so it's it's something else to see so I think we want to go down and help and protect and when people are I guess are dressing up like firemen even they're sneaking in there and they're sifting through people's uh you know people's burnt half burnt buildings and half burnt houses and you know take anything of value so if we can do something to help with that and then obviously there's going to be a lot of fences there's a lot of fencing going in man all these fences got RI you know taken out and I think these wood fences will get replaced vinyl ones and other stuff that's more you know fire retardant than um what was out there so I think you're gonna see yeah yeah so if any manufacturers are out there um definitely reach out to us because we're going to look for staging a bunch of materials down there there's going to be a lot of fence materials needed to rebuild these 13 14,000 structures have already been burnt down so um yeah contact Susan Fen show.com if you want to help and uh get kind of on the list we're also looking for licensed contractors for California um that would be able to actually go on a list that we're going to be work with um the teams down there to hand out to homeowners to get and hopefully the insurance companies and stuff to get on a list of uh licensed contractors you know to help get fences and security stuff built a lot of fen is going to go in so we're kind of excited about that um it looks like uh Founders fence donated 100 panels um I donated 100 panels Las Vegas fence as well um that's going to go into this thing so we need more panels and some fence materials and probably like 10,000 panels oh man I yeah it's and yeah and there's going to be a shortage eventually of panels there's going to I mean it's just going it's just it's a it's like a apocalyptic down there man it's just something else to see yeah but um also nafka yeah so they announced today they got uh you got this uh three EV events coming up these are Community projects these are you know non-for-profit helping out our our nation right so you got the service project that's going to be in North Carolina obviously where they were struck and hit the hardest right um there's another project in uh South from PA that is you know helping the community out so um it's a non for profit Community partner I don't think they release gonna release the name of what it is yet um but they need fence for families how about that and so the
Fence is being donated and we're looking for people to go there and help install it um so Naf is gonna lead way on that and then Napa generally does a yearly project at ARL National Cemetery almost always have done this these additional projects that they're adding on because nafka is really taking the Forefront uh for leading the way on these these helping out our in you know Community Partners so the Arlington part is going to happen again there there's no exact date on Arlington just yet it's about 580 feet of eight foot tall aluminum fence broke up in three segments and there's a tear out and whatever get tore out has to be reinstalled the same day so we're looking for we'd like to see three independent team leaders that were willing to take up and say I'll take a third take a third take a third and and get volunteers under them so we're looking for three that's why there's no set date there right now we're looking to coordinate that so that we can get the maximum number of some good team leads there that could run their segment with some volunteers under them to make sure that we can get this fence down and back up and perfect uh for the Arlington National Cemetery who do how do they reach out who do they reach out to to to volunteer for some of that Arlington Cemetery stuff generally you know I Marts Clint IMS myself we're all available nap's got a website and go to Facebook page as well um we'll look for a link and I'll get it in the comments for you guys call well and they'll be and and typically they're at defense show nafun typically has with the defense show so um that's October 1 so that's a good time also to walk up and um talk to CL and become part of Na right so na a great Association and what they're doing is they're really focusing on helping those in need right just like you are with the panels down in California but their main focus is how do we pull everyone together and they're taking the lead on that and get these projects so we all love doing projects to help everybody else out I mean yeah we just need help and figuring out where to go and when to do it lots to do man lots to do uh another big event coming up uh cm's event right here uh April 11th and 12th it's an open house we will be there putting on some no diig demonstrations as well for two days uh there's there's lunch out there there be a a bu to the game to the baseball game so is provided for the game and fireworks after the game as well so that'll be way up North Indiana uh good good ways for me but I'm I'll be there with the bus and the war wagon yeah what was that that just came up I don't know all that uh that's documents I don't know Susan what are you doing oh that's the link to cm's event oh is it okay cool cool so yeah so click on that I was wondering what they were saying I'm like is that one of our Google Docs she sharing I'm like oh careful don't s right too far in case you're wondering what all our username and passwords are click on that uh Pro that link right there should be able to log into everything we have which is not much you're not gonna get and uh last but not least uh big event big event coming up in April um CMM yeah is doing a open house right it's we calling that an open house it's an open house is it that's it we just had it on the screen and it just came down right yeah there you okay there it is so scan the QR code you're GNA be there doing uh vinyl fence or uh aluminum fence discipline Fino and aluminum yep Yeahs whose material are you using uh do you not know yet not 100% sure okay we'll find out I think it's bigger aluminum and Homeland vinyl but I hate to say that if I'm wrong but I believe that's what it is well if it's not it better be now if if you're listen you better get you better get some material over to CMM yard shoot I love them so I hope it's you guys I was on a phone call at Homeland uh today yeah I was talking to Jackie and Doug great people man always a good time man they had conversation with them I was on a phun with them for hours yesterday really yeah we all have things to do our phones are blowing up we need to move on y but my favorite time is this wait what Bri what it's coming who knows I don't even know who's who's first on this one hey guys says uh Ben uh this is again this is these these most of these I think all of them came from uh fence industry only Facebook um group so uh you can actually go and see what other people responded answers to
These these questions as well in the group and she typically picks pretty active ones I believe when she's randomly selects these so hey guys what's that I'm tired of paying for irrigation fixes aren't we all um I need welcome defensing I need something solid in writing um that explains to the homeowner the risk of hitting irrigation and private utilities would anyone care to share their damage release forms with me it would be great to see what is working and what is work I guess what is working without starting totally fresh thanks so uh you're not gonna win by just giving them a document that says you're not liable how do I know this because I tried that for 20 plus years I tried it in a fancy document and put it in the contract add it on the line item put it on the front of the contract give him a secondary document make him sign it in blood did all of that Y and it really didn't work because when you hit the utility they're going to be like well I didn't know my sewer line was one of those I didn't know that my C line was one and I didn't know that was there whatever blah blah blah blah blah yeah so uh what we have done and we found out is that UPF front we offer them private line protection as an aded fee if you like to purchase private line we ask them would you like to purchase private line protection well what is that oh great I love to tell you your drain lines your sewer lines your Berry dogs and animals and cable lines all this private stuff that's in the ground we don't know where it is and we can't locate it so if you buy private line protection from us will take responsibility and we will fix it if you don't want it just sign here says you don't want Private Life protection and you're going to assume responsibility when they sign that assumed responsibility it's like denying rental car insurance at the rental car counter when you get to a wck do you go back and say is this covered no sir you denied the coverage so when they deny the protection when we do hit something they'll generally come back and say you're G to fix that like U hold on a minute no you denied the coverage you didn't want the coverage you said you took care of it oh we did boom or they say yeah how much is that well we charge $10 a hole but they got to buy all the holes yep so it's 50 holes it's 500 bucks even if there's only Utilities in four of them right it's all or nothing because I don't know what's in the rest of the holes and so we just put that money in Kitty so that when we do hit one we now have funds to pay for the one and they and they bought the private line insurance right yep it has worked out very very well for us so Ben try that yep I think that's great I mean we we have it in our contracts and obvious like everybody else we put it in there any irrigation concrete cracked whatever it happens to be um irrigation lines private utilities we put in there if we hit it we're not responsible but you're right it's always I mean you could sure as crap man you hit a you hit a sprinkler line irrigation pipe or something they're like they still you cannot fix it and they're whether it's in your contract or not they're just pissed they're pissed that you hit it as if you should have known so you end up half the time just fixing it anyway I like that um and that's probably better even than having them initial next to it on the contract because you're actually ask them to decline it and you offer the service have you ever found that it's a um such an costly repair that you had to turn it over your insurance company so our document says we stop at a $5,000 okay so the protection the protection is up to $5,000 repair okay because otherwise you'd be turning this over to insurance company and then I wonder I wonder how that would hold up if your insurance company's like hey you actually offered them so originally we wrote this up as private line insurance and learned a lesson okay we can't write this up as private line Insurance because we are't insurance companies ask me how I learned that lesson so it's called private line protection and that was Chris he um he worked for us last year or not actually this year earlier in this year he um he actually runs some Crews at a at a landscape company so he probably have some good Insight on this so I will ask him how they handle it um off offline here how they handle it at their Landscape Company you know locally here in Las Vegas and see so thanks Chris for that um but yeah so I mean that's
Interesting I have it in there and anytime we've hit anything it's just been a battle or we fix it so hopefully that's uh that's good enough and I'm sure some people probably uh shared in the comments on the Facebook group fence industry only what their um terms look like or you can reach out to either me or Sean and we kind of share you ours just get a hold of one of us you know uh this one's you this one's me what brand have you installed and found good quality going to put up 240 feet coyote rollers are those the ones that go on top to keep the dogs from jumping over the fence you don't have Coyotes out there do you no but that's what they are right I seem like yeah a fence yeah we have Coyotes out here that jump that they'll I mean they'll jump a six foot fence you'll see them you'll see them walking along especially you've live backed up to you know one of the Canyons or up on the mountains you'll see them walking along the top of the fence or every once in a while you early morning if you go and walk your dog you'll see a couple coyotes in the middle of the street or something and um these coyote roller we make our own and they make a bunch of different brands but you just go online and buy them I don't know an actual brand name of coyote rollers though but you could um you know if you have a shop I guess you could just take some pieces of pipe or something and some I we used to make them out of like PVC pipe you take a piece of one and 38 and then you take like a some two-inch PVC and you just kind of put it over that and then when they go up there they it kind of rolls but um I don't know brand I don't know a brand you can you think of a brand of coyote rollers I've never installed them in my life I've never had a customer asked me I think we should go back in the group and see if uh people com I'm sure somebody commented no just say 31 R comment poor Z yeah and that was after yeah after 35 minutes it had 31 postre so I bet you somebody was commenting I don't know when that was posted yeah Rising contributor hey thanks Joe Daryl man he's in there a lot look allar Allstar contributor darl Sullivan has anybody done a crossbuck fence um where the am I did I say that right cross Buck fence where the cross was half lapped opposed to bending one board pros and cons picks um I know what he's talking about so when they cross here um they wouldn't bow around each other if you were to half flat that you would have to make sure that you are completely perfectly flat because the half when those things grows up and down a grade that joint will change and so the degree that you cut the half flap at it won't be 45 degrees or 22 whatever that is whatever it is it won't be the same on the next one and the next one and the next one and it would be just awful to try to to toh figure out the degrees if it's perfectly absolutely flat like a railing you could probably manufacture those and cut that half lap out yeah yeah we don't do much wood but if I did I'd use a lot of Elmer's glue and make sure that wherever it was like crossing over each other you put a nice thick coat of Elmer's glue in there so that it doesn't separate as it you know as it contracts expands expands and contracts yeah great questions everybody uh go to fence industry only if you want to see what everybody commented on uh that's it's easy to find go Facebook and type in fence industry only front rocks on here right now oh is he he got his own magazine coming out oh that's right supposed to get article by Friday we're gonna be working on that to do tonight all the other stuff I gota do tonight I'm not canon Johnson Canon Johnson Canon Johnson is is the router uh training too um I think it needs to be I'm gonna say something to Sean yeah did you see what Canon's doing uh with Alex yes the brand uh crazy Canon just doesn't go to work man he goton can goes shining object yeah all over the place love him to death man Focus can drop the name of that brand um I feel bad for forgetting right now with the name of brand something uh drop the name in there brand builders Brand Build Builders yeah drop a link in there um into the comments so people could find that because that looked really cool you know what they were doing I saw that on the yeah another podcast so um cool yeah and but we got a special guest today are we are we ready to bring a special gu a young eager
Entrepreneur young yeah young remember when we were this young barely when I was this young I thought I was the most badass fencer on the planet I'm not lying oh man you can't remember back that far let's bring Dylan you and I we don't remember being this young Dylan what's going what's going on man you don't look like you're a no stressed out fencer they all relaxed not yet not yet you will be just getting into it huh so you just got full-fledged all the way in all in the offenseive industry huh yep been around it for a while so you just bought a franchise which is interesting because franch are really taken off in uh the US and um are they that do you think they're that prevalent around the world or uh in other countries I don't know I don't know I do know there's several in Australia I know this I know that there was a bunch and that was 20 years ago there was a bunch so if that tells you anything so um tell us the name of your franchise Dylan Superior finc and rail we bought a location you know they have plenty of those locations I think they're at like location got a couple I think from my knowledge like one of the most established franchises in the US for fence uh Superior fence they definitely were the first ones weren't they yeah Superior and top I think of the main but Superior obviously man they've got it figured out Z yeah talk to Zack pton man he is he is just a one sharp dude I mean uh always a good time when you have a conversation with him you could I could go on for hours talking to that guy man so congratulations yeah that's a big that's a big step what made you um I mean I'm sure you ran the numbers and and just you know you kind of ran the different options of starting your own opposed to getting a franchise what made you want to get a franchise what was the we I mean me and my brother obviously my brother doesn't know as much it was me and my brother purchased the franchise so but he doesn't know as much as business as he does as he knows installing so he really good at installing I'm more business oriented I would say um so like the main reason we looked into it was that you have uh Management Systems you have all that stuff in place so you know it makes more sense besides starting from scratch we could have gone off into a bigger Market would have been a lot harder to start from scratch you know all that stuff so we just felt that we ran the numbers and it was probably better off for us to have you know you get the brand value so you get the leads I mean you know you get what comes with it so brand value um and you also get software with Superior too right where most industry they don't have a no way of tracking hardly anything in their business I know I've been there right yeah so I would say uh what and I know there's a question on there but uh fence 360 is the software that we use for it's what's built for Superior oh I lost Focus yeah it's not focusing very well there you go um and so that that's a huge part for why we chose this because you think about you know we we have a few uh people in our area that we work with here and there and um you know we just helped him out with the job the other day and he was he was calling me and I was talking to him and he said his biggest uh issue was him being in the field but also trying to do all the stuff that he's got going on so he doesn't have another fence you talk to this young guy that just started in a business yeah and he's fighting the battles that you're not going to have to fight so he's like literally the opposite of what you're going through and you went job and he was telling you the struggles that he has that you thought you would have right so if you start from scratch you're gonna fight those battles of having to figure out each individual software you're going to use and there's not one software might not work for one software as a solution for all right you have to go and figure out 10 different softwares to use or uh 10 different accounting whatever it's going to be like you have to go through a bunch of versions of like oh is this going to work oh it didn't work next one you know you got to Cle through where this it's proven system like you know there's a reason there's so many locations you know they do have the software that's involved so it works um and that's a huge part you know it's a lot less stress you can focus more on the leadership aspect and you know the actual important parts of growing and
Scaling what what type of sacrifices are you guys making to make this make this happen how I'd say the biggest sacrifice is uh the move so for us to kind of move into this location for it to make sense we're going to be tell what that mean mean to move the living situation we're going to be in is a living on the office so the office you're literally both gonna move to the shop that you purchased and live there yes I wish like you're gonna you're gonna like live in CS in the welding shop or what is that what I bought barbecue you're gonna be eating off of barbecue and stuff I bought a cheap camper like the cheapest they had on the lot so I was like a sales guy is sitting there trying to get us to buy you know a 50 60 70,000 camper my you know my girlfriend's freaking out like you know we can't afford this all this stuff I was like look don't listen to him we're gonna go find the one that's cheapest we're like yeah I want that one so we purchased the cheapest option um that they had and so we'll be moving living in that and um you know that'll be their situation so that's no rent payment something like that and then you know what what is your biggest concern or worry that you have like um you know there's probably plenty of concerns uh worries right but yeah right biggest one is probably just um I mean obviously I think everyone's just like paying bills on time right making sure you have enough work I mean that's probably going to be the biggest I me because in your situation you're starting out with a loan and you have franchise fees you got to pay immediately and where some of the guys starting out fresh out of the garage they may have a lot of bills but they don't have a lot of resources either so pass right so those guys if they if you know if they're not working it doesn't you know they still don't have Bill bills to pay if we're not working we still got Bill space so it's a big difference where we have to be putting stuff in installed so so tell tell us how what's it like I mean do you just because you're getting a franchise does that mean you've got leads right out of the door I mean are they going to start you know because there they they got a big marketing thing going around the country already does that mean the phone's going to start ringing or do you have to get out there and do like the rest like like somebody and hang flyers on doors like everybody else I mean what's what's the advantage leadwise when you buy a franchise I guess that's a big question a lot of people have well I mean in our situation we're purchasing one that was semi already running like very you know minimally running so there the phone is ringing like their leads but um you know they have a good marketing team put together and so I'm I you know did a few I did a meeting or two this week with that marketing director that they have in place like these are the things that you get with it marketing um whole team of marketing people that will help us dial down our you know SEO all the way and then you know where we need to put allocate money towards this or whatever it is and uh exactly like you know our conversion rate like we have a whole we get a whole sheet that has all our metrics on it um so I would say our our phones are you know still going uh in our situation I'd say even if you just purchase it from scratch and you're still getting the brand value so you know somebody's going to recognize the name you have the website that's huge the website is for all the locations so you get that website that Google reviews are like over 20,000 yeah yeah 15,000 Google reviews so you get the power of that um so I'd say it's definitely a plus so do you um do they pretty much handle the mar I mean keep in mind I know I'm being nosy so if you just tell me to you know tell me to kick rocks tell me to kick rocks if I end up stepping over and asking a question you're not supposed to talk about or something maybe you got non-disclosure forms or something but I guess curious minds so um do they handle all the marketing for you I mean or is it something you can just go focus on running the business and focus on on installing fence and they they pretty I mean if you decided if you wanted to go that route will they just 100% take care of the marketing and your phone's just going to ring or do you have to do something to to do on the you know something else beyond their websites and stuff there's it's very minimal I say I mean it's very I'll say that there's
Very minimal I mean that you have to do you can to do yeah what you can do you can do a lot like what I'm doing now stepping in you know taking the leadership to get really involved with it and to make sure that everything is going the way it's supposed to go and make sure we're not doing things that we don't really want to do and that we're in that right direction but yeah I mean there's a marketing this is It's whole team so there's you know person you know oh I got to talk to this person so it's an entire team that you know takes care of it and is is there to answer your questions all that stuff so yeah it's it's a a thing where you you know you can do as much as you want and so for me I'll be doing as much as I can is there a certain style fences that you're allowed to do or can you build any style fence I mean can you treat it like a regular Fence Company where you can bid anything you want or is there certain style fences that you have to stick with based off of materials that you have to purchase through certain Supply you know what I mean or can you go out run the company separately and just use the brand there's probably a few limitations very very minimal limitations same thing but for the most part yeah I mean you can order you know you can install the what you want to install B what you want to do we have territory so you know we can't go outside of that but they give you vendors you could buy from but you don't have to buy from but you don't have to buy so he you get buying power is that right buying power right as if who were a Mr Fence right whereas if you were a brand new fence company that's not going to happen yeah so you get certain pricing a little bit better than a guy just starting out that didn't have right didn't build a relationship up with so I mean that's that's a big Advantage so you're you're going to be able to call up um the master hos and the merchants and all the other suppliers and say you're a superior fence in rail franchise and you're going to get your account set up maybe a little bit easier and things like that too and then um you're pricing based off of bulk then do do they negotiate pricing with these uh suppliers for the all the franchises so is that what it is that's great yeah that's a big advantage to somebody starting out because that takes years and years to build that up so um congratulations on that man absolutely I'm gonna start getting my materials through you it appar appears you know what I mean possible you'll be flipping some truckloads and materials over to Las Vegas fence hooking me up man hooking me up with your deals so Dylan what do you think your strongest trait is gonna be for you to be successful you're bringing to the table like uh leadership yeah leadership so I mean our Focus like obviously we're very smart so we got three people right now it's the is the start so you know it's the winter time so hopefully come March is when we can really start to build our team but um I mean I'm going to look real deep into you know the the hiring aspect and building a culture of people that you know want to show up and and want to come to work and and grow so I'd say leadership 100% is going to be the biggest trait nice what kind of leers what kind of leadership training do you have you I mean have you done what makes you what makes you think you're going to be a good leader is it something you you want to strive to be a good leader or you got some experience in leadership that you're you're excited to I mean from previous experience just from like I've had a few other small businesses I've always been the one that's you know taken the leadership to you know figure out what what goals we're going to put out what what steps we're going to take to hit those goals and kind of the this isn't the first time youve had people work for you yeah and how did it go when you had people working for you uh I mean it was yeah it was fun but that was uh that's the same look we all get well it was fun so they don't work as hard as you do right no matter who you right this doesn't happen is that right so how much experience in the fence industry do you have if you had to put it in years or um what would you say fencing is me versus my brother he's got obviously a ton more I mean me like solid years say like three or four like Sol four or five I mean I I've been touching it doing it forever but like actually you know starting to learn and experience that like probably more towards the freshman sophomore year high school and then okay
I kind of stepped out of a little bit and then now I'm back so so you got three or four and then your brother you and your brother bought this franchise so um your brother has how many years you think probably uh now eight nine I don't know he started working fulltime when he was sophomore so yeah sophomore Jun whatever this is interesting this 21 and how old is your brother than 22 Yeah so this breaks that stigma a lot of people think that um when you see a franchise it's somebody that's been in the business less than a year um you guys are 10 years or more combined experience purchasing and running a franchise so it's not just people that are inexperienced in the industry is what that it's interesting to hear isn't it yeah that's great true yeah that could be some of the newer companies it could be something to look at right three or four years experience they're grinding it out and they're seeing the troubles that Dylan was talking about just now and franchise might be an option to look at change your name and jump on board and use experience you already have and launch it maybe yeah yeah that's interesting I'd like to get more um of the franchises that have been established for a little while on here and talking let's I'd like to research and see how many how many of these franchise I think there's a lot of them out there that have been doing it for a while that just decided they wanted they wanted some of the organization and the structure so you said fence 360 was the software was that um is that a software that comes with the franchise yeah it's there it's from what I understand it's it's what they built they made that that software and it's Soup To Nuts it's everything the bidding the ordering the inventory I mean every every little aspect you can think of we have all of our leads in there so like you know me and my sales lady we have a you know very uh coordinated plan with all our leads and we know what's going on with every single one so we can follow up with everybody and so I mean I mean so imagine being organized enough that on your screen you have every call every email every lead every person and it's telling you when the phone rang and when you called them back and when you sold the job the software does that when if if they closed out like if lead was lost if it's a good lead badly kind of all that stuff yeah and Co you got bidding schedule well there's um like yeah you have all all your stuff on there contracts your billing all that stuff so is there any advice you give to another young entrepreneur in your shoes maybe the 18 to 21 year old like it's not sure about is there anything you would tell them start that's it good advice just F just start just do it start digging holes right I say yeah yeah you gotta be you got like everything else you got to be digging holes within five minutes of getting on the job right just start I'd say like I'd say like uh you know I graduated with a lot of people that you know are talked about owning businesses as well and you know they're all in college now doing the same thing as like going to get a B business management degree all that stuff and I I I talked to some of these uh people a few times and you know they're all still talking about how they're going to own a business or whatever this is but I feel like that you don't get any hands-on experience so you don't actually get the doing it part and so a lot of them you know procrastinate doing it or you don't really get the full feel for it which is what it's actually GNA be yeah yeah how excited are you scale of one to 10 how excited are you to get that have you done your first job yet since you uh purchased the franchise uh we are very close we are very close we we lost two weeks of production so uh just like we did yeah they lost two weeks typical typical contractor already man typical contractor already got he's already got excuses of why he's two weeks behind look at this huh we didn't we didn't install today we did install today but we got one the ground today what's gonna be your first fence tell us about your first fence job you're gonna be doing you have it sold already you said you started it yeah we have a commercial chain link very small commercial chain link job for our first one so very small uh it's going to be six foot commercial uh chain link it's for uh Downey profession which is like a
They're a contractor that is uh near us so so are you are you actually out there working on it already yourself are you gonna be are you gonna be holes and are you yeah I've been salling for I mean for foreseeable future for sure um are you guys digging holes or pound and poles pound and pound and post I the biggest thing that I I would say is the digging holes for us is like the I mean obviously the last thing that we want to do um I feel like once you start to try to touch a hole everything just goes downhill you try to dig a hole it all goes downhill bran I don't know man I I I mean we drive some temporary fences but the rest of permanent we set I mean just from I'm just experience from my experience you know I mean from being in the field and and being somebody that's actually installing I just know like when you go to install fence we would do this all the time is you know the first part of the day like you know you're excited whatever and that that that um it just goes straight down you know it just goes just from if you're digging holes when you're digging holes when you you know let's just say you something messes up and you know augers hard hard digging whatever it is and it just it's like a curve it just starts to go down down slower and slower I feel like with the the the pounding it's just so much easier on everything stress body all that stuff that once you get past that part you're just you're just attaching stuff right you're just building the fence from what you you have it's a lot easier well you got that marshmallow ground out there that easy digging stuff man that's why you guys can just pound that you guys just walk out there and just kind of stick that post in the ground you know I don't even know I see those videos how many jobs have you sold so far we are at uh three jobs sold we have a few that we're working on we're we're trying to get you know Chas buddy three jobs you got three jobs already can I borrow some money huh I need to get some inventory look at you man you're just off running we see I we we need a we need a few more for the months month month comes up so you know we'll be chasing them for sure well cool we actually have a cool little picture of you and your brother I believe uh purchasing it let's pop that up oh okay there you go look at that look at that so you purchased a franchise were you just there Sean um just to say hi when these guys were purchasing this or oh Dad was very proud of the boys buying it they bought it from us yes that's cool that's cool yes yes yes we passing on some knowledge I'm sure with that uh that agreement there so these guys went out there got yourself a business loan I you had to learn a lot about business really quick huh for sure yeah we're we're going to be learning a lot for nonstop learning for a few for a while yeah they're starting out with a lot of things that most most of us didn't I know when I first started out I surely didn't have a for truck and a router and flatbed trucks a lot and so out the gate they have they have all that and it's got they gotta keep it right that's the hard part there but now you gotta keep it yeah I think I started off with an old beat up Chevy S10 and an angry wife so that's what I started with all right definitely wasn't as organized you're going to have there was no computer there no software nothing helping right yeah maybe it was better back then we didn't know how much money we were losing now you got computers tracking it all now we computers hey Dylan uh Sean obviously uh you guys it was great having you guys on um anything else uh Dylan you wanted to throw out there at the last minute uh do a big exciting something uh I'm ready you look ready we can't I can't wait to have you back on hopefully in about six months maybe at the end of the year or something hey in six months you'll have less hair watch might be bald in six months you're probably gonna look like you're 45 um you're gonna be a lot more angry when we ask wouldn't it be funny to have it back on in a year and then put it side by side the interview and see the facial expressions and the tiredness in the face as he post a picture of him selling it to someone else y story all right well uh thank you guys uh it was great um we will talk to everybody that's watching everybody that's watching and tuning in um taking time away from your life and your family and everything we appreciate it um like
